Every three minutes, a child is born with a cleft — often unable to eat, speak, socialise or smile. In some places these children are shunned and rejected. And in too many cases, their parents can’t afford to give them the surgeries they need to live a normal life.
Every year, Operation Smile, provides free surgery to thousands of children in over 50 countries around the world, healing their smiles and bringing hope for a better future.
This has been a busy week for UCC SurgSoc, with three Operation Smile related events.
Thanks to everyone who donated at our Bake Sale on Monday, it was a very successful (and delicious!) day for a fantastic cause!
Today was World Smile Day, and there was a collection organised in Cork City, for which it thankfully stayed dry! Again, we’re grateful to all who donated and all of the wonderful volunteers.
Tomorrow, we will be holding a talk, entitled “Operation Smile: Plastic Surgery”, at 6.30pm, Brookfield G10. The talk will be given by Dr Eoin O’Broin, a Plastic Surgeon in CUH who has worked with Operation Smile over the course of his career. Everyone is welcome
